ID Please

Can someone please help me ID what this is that's growing through asphalt?

It's somewhat soft to the touch. Not much else to say about it. Just wondering what it might be.

Can't say which species... it is amazing the pressure they create to push through asphalt!!!

Anything that can be done to keep that from happening?

If there's a dead tree close by you will continue to have mushrooms popping up until the underground roots rot away....and that can take a few years depending how large the tree is/was!
A quick solution would be to dig up the area and remove the roots.....

Interesting, that is quite unfortunate. There is a row of trees 10 ft each maybe. They've been overrun by ivy and most have been killed by it. Guess that would be the explanation. If they're already dead would removing them help this process at all? (Roots are under the driveway so digging them up is currently not an option).

Removing the dead trees won't stop the process on the dead roots under the driveway, only time will stop it when they finally rot away.
Best keep a bag of asphalt patchup ready to fill the holes after the mushrooms are finished....I suspect you will have this happen in and around the first mushroom eruption!!!

Yea I already see at least two more spots where they're coming up. My plan is to rid myself of the dead trees / half dead trees as well as the ivy that's growing. Not that it'll help this issue currently but at least when I put new trees next to the driveway they won't be suffocated by the ivy. Thanks for the input, hopefully the mushrooms don't destroy the entire driveway.
