We took a grapefruit from Palm Springs, CA this last week, and just cut it open. You can imagine our surprise when we found this: http://paulrittman.com/Sprout.jpg

Now that we have it, we'd like to try to keep it alive until growing season (spring?).

What is the best thing to do---leave it there, and just water the grapefruit? Or take it out and put it in a cup of water, keeping it indoors? Or??????

The fruit doesn't look all that appetizing!
I'd take the sprouts (gently) and pot them up in a good sterile soil-less mix........water and place a plastic baggie over it to help create a humid environment....place pot in a bright window, but not in direct sunlight!

OK, can do.... now when you say a "soil-less mix," what do you mean by that? No potting or gardening soil, just plain dirt?

Soil-less is mostly peat moss with perlite or vermiculite added ...it is sterilized and used for seed starting, seedlings and cutting.
