My mandevilla that I spent 50 bucks on last spring has been overwintering in the house. I expected white flies, mealybugs, thrips and spidermites and maybe scale. So far, I only see signs of thrips, a little twisting and curling in the leaves. When she goes outside I will probably treat her with a systemic insecticide and a soap spray. I did see the first buds sprouting the other day. When I got her last year she was cut way back, rebounded beautifully and gave us months of pleasure. Bruce has decided that we should be propagating her, I think that she would make nice party favors or housewarming gifts for all of the people that are moving here with the Volvo restructuring.

I thought I was crazy when I spent 30 bucks for mine............;).....but who can resist this beautiful plant. I like the idea of yours with the party favours, or housewarming gift.......now today, I am noticing, a fine "web"...........how do I treat this? Soap and water?

We have a new large deck and do a lot of entertaining, so we needed something that would be wow. I would say you probably have spider mites, you can try the soap and water or Crabbergirls super home remedy for whatever ails your plants.

Yes, I am trying the soap and water..............Oh, I would love to see pics of your deck........and I am sure the Mandevilla is a "wow" factor..........nice:)

Here is a picture taken last spring from our backyard. Our yard backs onto a woodlot, so sitting on the deck is one of our favorite things. The mandevilla is really small in this picture.

I have a red one my DD gave me for Christmas. It was labelled a Sun Parasol Vine ,I can't imagine having to restart everything each year ,that is real dedication.Mine is outside all year round (well I only got it 3 months ago but it will be) and is 3 times the size already I am very pleased with it .The description Parasol does suit it as they do look like one unfurling in the sun.One question though how tall do they get?

Jade......your deck is lovely! Do you have lots of container plants? Looks like you have a lovely view from the deck also. Looks very large as well....nice. Thanks for posting.

I put bamboo sticks in my pot for it to climb on, and last year the sticks were 6ft., and it grew beyond that, so this year I am going to have to look for some thing taller................Welcome to the forum Belladonna.........:)

Mari-Jo,
Thanks for the compliments on the deck, we love it. Unfortunately my Mandevilla is not a happy camper right now. It got thrips or spider mites, my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be, I need to find my magnifying glass, another thing lost in the move. I took it out on the porch and gave it a spray a week and a half ago, and will spray it again this weekend. Did an over the counter spray the first time, and this time I will spray it with Crabbers spray, or soapy water. We had SNOW this morning, so we will see if the temps rebound a bit before I put her on the deck to spray her again. Almost all of her leaves have dropped, but she has new growth and a ton of new sprouts. .We just need to get our weather regulated and get her back outside.
We have an Herb pot and a pot for something else this year. We have a porch off the side and front of our house too, so I bought a beautiful pot for that last year when it was 50% off. I couldn't find any pots that I liked last year until I happened to find a very cool hardware store, which is one of my favorite places to go. We have been there a couple of times in the past few weeks, they have the best tropical fish!! And some very cute bunnies right now for Easter. Our kitties would love the bunnies, too much I figure. Same with the fish, the kitties would just love them enough to try to jump in the tank, so safer without them.
I will get my camera in for repairs and start posting more pictures.

I have red fury!

I BOUGHT A Mandevilla! $8.99 I had just went shopping for almost 4hours for 3 people and as I was leaving the cashier pulled a plant out to give to her helper I yelled what is that *LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
She said a Mandevilla I said no way! She knew I was a frugal person so she stated it is 8.99 I said are you positive?
She said yes I said I'll take it I have several friends that have it..then I told her all that I knew and held up the line *LOL I sure did *LOL
Told her I have never grown only going by my reading and talking to my friends here *LOL
So I was wondering does anyone have " Red Fury"?
I didn't re read this thread, pressed for time ..

I have to figure out the best location and probably re read this thread I have not spent that much $$ on an out door plant in all my days...Bought one houseplant for 10.00 that was 7 years ago and it is still alive and reproducing*LOL

The nursery where I buy my plants have them for $8.99 every year. I like them but don't have time for one right now. Maybe in a couple of years.

HD had some for $5.99 but I passed even though I really like them but I have lost two of them and two Boganvillea. So those are two plants I give up on.

My daughter gave me a red one for Mother's day. This is the second one for me. The first didn't make it. I'll try hard to keep this one living but I'm kinda lost as to how to care for it..I guess I'll google!

I just got a red one this week. Mine was 10.99. I don't think the blooms are as large as the pink ones, on mine at least. Mine says full sun so I potted it and left it on the deck.

Here is a picture of mine. Some of the blooms have fallen off since I got it but I expected that after repotting it.

I think, from having grown them both, that the pink one is a stronger viner than the red. The pink ones put out fewer vines, but they're longer with stronger stems. The red ones have more stems then the pink, but they don't vine as aggressively as the pink.

I am hoping that our mandevilla makes a strong recovery after a near death experience this winter. It was doing great until the end of February...then all of the leaves started falling off. It has lots of new leaf buds, but only a few actual leaves. We put it back out on the deck, but have since had soooooo much rain, and there is a frost advisory for tonight. I can't believe the swings in Temps. I have all of my annuals planted all over the yard...gotta pray for no frost. Wasn't it 93 degrees a couple of weeks ago?

Have you brought in you plants yet??

How long for the cuttings and root in soil or water?

Thank you!

Mine is going strong heading into its 3rd season. It is never happy overwintering inside but I keep telling her that in a few months she can go back out and bloom her little head off.
