No it's not either of those. Its a small patch with white, pink and purple blooms. They are in my sisters garden and she doesn't remember planting them and wanted to know if I knew what they were. It has to be some seed that were sown because of the different colors.
Bing-bong!
While cutting the grass along the road I ran over a wildflower just like the one you posted Maggie!
We see then here along roadsides, in unused fields and even along the beach sand dunes! The come in white, blue/lavander and pink!
It is a wild phlox Phlox divaricata (Wild Blue Phlox, Woodland Phlox, Wild Sweet William)
It was one of those eureka moments while cutting the grass!
I knew I knew it but, just couldn't get it becasue of the number of petals.
Most phlox species have 5 petals!
Probably came in a wildseed mix like Dawn mentioned. But, I think the seed could have come mixed in with bagged soil!
Ok so I asked her if she had planted any wildflower seed and she said she did 3 years ago. She said every year some strange flower pops up. So thats probaley where they came from. Thanks again guys.
I bit if info on the seeds: they can remain viable in the soil for a very long time. All they need is someone to turn the soil to expose the seeds to light and away they grow!
