The trellis i built is an "A" frame trellis, about 5ft high by 5ft wide......My question is would i be able to plant cucumbers on one side and then butternut squash on the other? Is it wise to share the same real estate with 2 kinds of climbers?

Cucumbers are fair climbers (with some directional help upwards), but squash are sprawlers and grow best growing over the soil surface so they can root at each leaf node!
Cucs and scarlet runner beans would be a better combination!

Ok, sounds great ron!! thanks very much....and thank you for the welcome :D

I run butternut squash up trellises without much trouble. You will need to support the fruit as it will rip the vines from the trellis. Because they don't set more roots down as they climb you'll need to make sure it is well watered.

I have never mixed cucumbers and squash on one trellis though.

I used to work with an old guy who was raised on a farm. In his old farmers wisdom he said you should have space between large flowered squash and smaller flowered melons and cucs. His reasoning is the bees will be attracted to the large flowers and ignore the small ones. Just like companion planting there is no evidence to back this up though.

Your squash will out grow the cucumbers and probably over take them. I grow them on separate trellises.

As the plants grow every few days tie the vines to the trellis with jute twine. If the squash is firmly attached to the trellis the plants will hold the squash.

I grew grey hopi on fencing last summer and the fruit held. Some squash were 10 pounds. The important thing is to tie the vines to the support.

Good luck and have fun!
