I have purple iris' peeking thru the ground. How do I feed them? And when?
Also do I need to divide them?
What type of iris are they?
If they are bearded iris you do need to divide them about every 4 or so years. I have never used fertilizer on mine they are just really hardy. But some folks may have other opinions so listen to them

If they are the spring blooming type you can use a water soluable type fert such as 10-30-15 once the flowers fade (follow direction). Give them a good soaking!
This will give them a good boost for next year's display.
The spring blooming iris form small bulbs and they bloom before sending up a small tuff of leaves.
Iris will start falling over if you don't fertilize them sometime. They need the calcium, etc for strong stems.

I have ...seriously 1000's of blue flag iris. I have never fertilized them. The only time I split them is if I am giving them away ( any one want some? Just pay postage and they are yours)
However, other Iris types, that I have gotten from the very gardeners on this site, I do tend to keep them mulched in and I add compost twice a year. They seem to be doing great!
My blue flag are starting to bloom. Soon I will have a gren and blue sea.
